OUR MISSION

The Mission of the Institute of Health Service Administrators of Nigeria (IHSAN) is:

(a) Promoting the professional education and training of Managers, Planners and Administrators of Health Services;

(b) Upholding and improving standards of planning and management of health services; and

(c) Co-operating with other professional bodies in the health field to improve the quality of health care.

OUR OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Institute include:

  1. To improve the quality of health services administration, planning and management in Nigeria.
  2. To determine what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the profession and raising those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit, 
  3. To secure the establishment and maintenance of register of persons entitled to practice the profession of health service administration: 
  4. To regulate and control the practice of health service planning and administration in Nigeria in all its aspects and ramifications; 
  5. To establish courses for training persons seeking to become members of the profession;
  6. To approve any institution either in Nigeria or elsewhere, which the Institute considers is properly organised and equipped for conducting the whole or any part of the course of training approved by the Institute;
  7. To develop and encourage members of the profession to participate in continuing education programmes through conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. 
  8. To collect, collate and publish information on health service practice, health laws, or issues of interest to members of the profession and to public at large.

Open to any person who is enrolled in an approved course or courses in Health Services Administration on a full-time basis. Can advance to Licentiate after completing his course.

Open to candidate who at the date of application;

  1.  Holds an acceptable qualification in administration and management
  2. Is employed in healthcare facility on a permanent full-time basis in a senior staff position in other health service professions other than in the administrative cadre for not less than thirty-six (36) months
  3. Satisfy other requirements that may be specified by the Institute's Council

An Affiliate member may be awarded either Associateship or Fellowship after some years as an affiliate member depending on the Council's assessment of his interest and substantial contributions to the affairs of the Institute

Candidates shall at the date of application:


1. Have successfully completed an approved course in Health Services Administration of any other course of instruction in an institution of higher learning which qualified them for employment in a senior administrative position in a healthcare institution.


2. Be employed in a sense executive or administrative position on a permanent full-time basis, or


3. Have health-related professional background and is employed in capacity which duties are essentially administrative in a health service institution, and is on a salary of GL 12 or above or hold an acceptable academic qualification in administration of management 


May advance to Associateship after Twenty four (24) Calendar months

Candidates shall, at the date of application,


  1. Have been Licentiate for a period not less than Twenty four calendar months, or

  2.  Possess a Bachelor's Degree in Health Service Administration or be a non graduate possessing a post-graduate diploma in Health Service Administration.

  3.  Possess a high degree acceptable to Council or a diploma in Health Service Administration in addition to a first degree and is employed in a health service institution


May advance to fellowship after live (5) years

Candidates shall, at the date of application


  1. Have been an associate for a period not less than give (5) years:

  2. Have at least ten (10) years post qualification experience in administration in a healthcare facility,

  3. Possess additional educational qualifications, attended approved courses, presented papers at learned conferences, written articles in learned professional journals, and generally contributed to the improvements of standards of health service administration, be employed in a position at Grade Level 14 and above (or equivalent).
